Week 2 Discussion Questions
In Technologies of the Third Mediamorphosis, Marshall McLuhan is quoted as saying “When information moves at electric speed, the world of trends and rumors become the ‘real’ world.” (Mediamorphosis, p99) What are some ways in which this affects the prioritizing of credibility vs. speed? Is it a trade-off where the benefits outweigh the cost?
Also in Technologies of the Third Mediamorphosis, the “survival principle” is introduced. (p.105) According to this principle, media forms are constantly evolving/adapting as time progresses. As the Internet evolves and adapts, do you think there ever come a point where it will phase out and be replaced by an entirely different medium/platform?
My third discussion question is in Esther's Week 2 blog in "aha #2".

I do not believe that the Internet will see a “phase out” period in my lifetime, nor be replaced by a different medium to that respect either. Rather, I see the Internet having various stages of change. For instance, the Internet is now available on almost all cellular phones. Also, more and more, the knowledge of the Internet and the ability to use it is becoming a standard requirement for jobs. Ultimately, as humans are becoming increasingly dependent on the Internet, a dramatic change like a total reformation is highly unlikely. The Internet is ever evolving; becoming incorporated and integrated within the systems of communication humans interact with on a daily basis. Also, the amount of information communicated, stored, purchased, and used in general on the Internet becoming obsolete and/or transformed could potentially create chaos in the world. Furthermore, the physical technologies, like the computer, PDA, cell phones, etc. would also become potentially (but most likely) marginalized. New technologies would have to develop because of the introduction of the new medium, also increasing the funding and investment on developing the medium. However, if in the future, a new technology were to be used in proxy of the Internet, it’d probably be through satellites of some kind that would encompass the functionality and capacity as the Internet and provide the speed, access and freedom, as does the Internet.
